This map's
design came from a desire to have the player fight their way
to the top of a tall building and have a dramatic exit
involving a vehicle. There was also an interest in
exploring other building types that weren't seen in
Half-Life 2 yet, such as multi-level parking garages.
In the above sketch, I explored the player flow along with
the arrangement and scale of the various areas: underground
tunnel, ruined streetscape, high-rise building, and parking
garages. Eventually the freeway and multiple floors of
the second parking garage would be cut to manage the scope
and the high-rise would become a mid-rise.
