SpaceHulk - Mission 3: Rescue

This level was based on a two part assignment that reevaluated the SpaceHulk map - Mission 3: Rescue.  The first half of the project (3 days for paper design) focused on adding one new game mechanic in the critical section of the map.  The second half of the project (1 week for Unreal map) sought to recreate the experience of the original game with the reimagined map as the basis of design.  This was a solo effort where I was responsible for designing the environment and gameplay in the level as well as any scripting.

Design Goals:

I wanted to follow the modified plan's physical layout and player resources as close as possible to establish an immediate connection to the original game.  I believed that the physical confinement and lack of supplies was crucial in helping players experience similar gameplay as the original.

For the new game mechanic, I wanted to add a central room where the two enemies would confront each other and have an unique challenge in navigating through it.  I felt this central area had to be either a trap or a device to complement to the tension and deadly odds of the SpaceHulk setting.

Since the inspiration for the original SpaceHulk game was the movie Alien, I felt it necessary to recreate the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere of the movie in my level.
